What hako keeps.

Almost nothing. This page says exactly what, on all three surfaces — the device, the applications, and this website.

01 / The device

hako has no internet connection and no server. hako cannot send data to us, because there is no location to send it to. hako contains no analytics function and no identification number that we collect.

Your photos move from the card to your phone across a private radio link. hako makes this link only for the time of the transfer. No copy of a file stays in a different location.

Warning

The password for the radio link is on the NFC tag. This is necessary, because it makes the touch operation immediate. A person who holds a phone one or two centimetres from the case can therefore read the card. Do not put private data on a card in hako.

02 / The applications

The applications speak to hako only. They have no account and no analytics component. They use the network only for the local link to hako. Photos that you copy go to the storage in your phone. You control them.

03 / This website

This website has no cookies, no analytics, no advertisement components, and no external fonts. Your browser sends no request to a different company. All the files on this page come from tryhako.com. Our own server does tell Meta when someone joins the waitlist, which section 04 describes exactly; that occurs after you leave, on our machine, and nothing about it touches yours. The website keeps nothing in your browser — including your choice of light or dark theme, which lasts only as long as the page is open.

Cloudflare supplies the servers for this website. As the supplier, Cloudflare processes usual server records: the IP address, the time, the page address, and the browser name. Cloudflare processes them to supply the page and to prevent incorrect use. We do not make a profile from these records. We do not put them together with other data.

Cloudflare also adds two things to this page after it leaves our files. You can see both if you read the page source. We describe them here because the first paragraph above is a strong claim, and you should be able to check it against what your browser receives.

An analytics tag. Cloudflare puts it in the page automatically. The security rule for this page permits scripts from tryhako.com only, so your browser refuses this one. It does not run and it sends nothing — we measured it, and the browser transfers zero bytes for it. We receive no analytics data of any kind, from this tag or from anything else.

A script that shows email addresses. Cloudflare replaces the addresses on this page with a coded form, and this small script puts them back. It comes from tryhako.com, so it does run. Its purpose is to hide the addresses from machines that collect them to send advertising mail. It does not identify you and it keeps nothing.

04 / The waitlist

If you give an email address, this is what occurs:

  • What we keep. The address, the date that you gave it, the date that we last changed the record, and how you arrived. "How you arrived" is the page that you used, or the name of the advertisement, if an advertisement brought you here. We use it to know which advertisements are worth their cost. It is not a profile and we do not use it for a different purpose. If an advertisement brought you here, we also keep the reference number from the link that you clicked, which is described below. If you reserve a unit, we also keep the date of the reservation, which Stripe tells us. We keep no other data. We do not keep your card details and we never receive them. We do not keep your country and we do not keep your IP address. We do not buy data about you from a different company.
  • One short-life record. To stop a machine from adding many false addresses, we count the recent sign-ups from each visitor. The count is kept against a scrambled form of the IP address, not the address itself, and it is deleted automatically one hour later. It is not joined to your email address and it is not used for any other purpose.
  • Why we keep it. To send one message, when you can buy hako. Possibly one more message, if there is an important change. An example of an important change is the end of the project. This is not a newsletter.
  • Who receives it. We do not sell it, rent it, or give it to an advertisement service. When you sign up, our website sends one message to our own mailbox, so that we know that you are there. That mailbox is Gmail, so Google holds that message, in the same way that your own email company holds every message that you receive. No other person and no other company receives your address.
  • If you reserve a unit. After you join the waitlist we offer you a reservation. It is optional and it is separate from the waitlist. If you take it, you leave this website and you pay Stripe, our payment company. Your email address is in the link, so that you do not type it again, and Stripe therefore receives it. Stripe also receives your card details. We never see your card details. If you reserve, we write to you about the Kickstarter as well, because that is what a reservation is for. If you do not reserve, none of this occurs and the sentences above describe everything.
  • Advertisements. We pay for advertisements, and we must know which of them work. When you join the waitlist, and again if you reserve, our server tells Meta that it occurred. We send a scrambled form of your email address, not the address itself. Meta can compare that scrambled form with the one they hold and tell us the advertisement worked; they cannot read your address from it. If an advertisement brought you here, we also send the reference number that Meta put in the link you clicked. That number identifies the click, not you, and Meta made it. We send nothing else. We do not send your IP address and we do not send your name. If we send the reference number, we also keep it, so that we can connect a later reservation to the same advertisement. This occurs on our server, not in your browser: this website still puts no advertisement component and no cookie on your machine, which is what section 03 says and what you can check.
  • How long we keep it. Until you tell us to remove it, or until we send the message. When we remove your address, we remove the message in our mailbox as well.
  • How to remove it. Answer a message from us, or send an email to hi@tryhako.com. We remove the address and tell you. There is no form. You do not give a reason.

05 / Email that you send

We keep your email for the time that we need it, to answer you and to remember the subject. We do not keep it for a longer time.

06 / Your rights

The law in your country can give you these rights: to see the personal data that we hold, to correct it, to remove it, or to object to our use of it. You do not have to quote a law. Send an email to hi@tryhako.com and we will do it. Usually the only data that we hold is an email address.

07 / Children

This website is not for children. We do not knowingly collect data from children.

08 / Changes to this page

If this page changes, the date at the top changes. If a change has an effect on the persons on the waitlist, we tell them in the message. We do not change this page quietly.
